Description

Set in both France and in Edgeworth’s native Ireland, Ormond tells the rags-to-riches story of Harry Ormond. Like most of Edgeworth’s works, Ormond has moral themes which run throughout the book. The course of Ormond’s rise is intended to demonstrate that success may be gained without underhanded actions and is instead possible through uprightness and responsibility. Despite being a product of negligence and abandonment, Ormond is dedicated to earning his fortune honorably through hard work. The novel’s revolutionary backdrop supplies Edgeworth with an abundance of material to use as commentary on the period’s changing politics. In the end, Ormond enlists in the British army, a move which elevates Ireland’s commitment to England over its prospects for independence by way of the French Revolution. Some critics have argued that Ormond’s choice indicates Edgeworth’s own belief of the importance of adhering to cultural tradition.
